An Ingrown toenail is a common, unpleasant problem that often presents to our podiatry practice. They usually affect the big toenail but can also be seen in any of the nails. The edge of the nail grows into the skin, once the edge of the nail breaks through the skin, it creates inflammation, discomfort, and pain. It can create a small wound that is susceptible to infection. Usually they present as minor discomfort but an infected ingrown toenail can progress into more serious pain and infection if left untreated.

Podiatrists offer a full scope of treatment to ingrown toenails. The most important treatment is the removal of the nail penetrating the skin. There is only mild pain associated with ingrown toenail removal. If this is achieved then almost instantly there is a reduction in pain. Within 24 hours there is a reduction in swelling, redness, and infection as wound healing progresses. Usually, any infection present will be resolved by your body’s immune system and there is generally no need for antibiotic treatment.

The most common reason for this is the shape of the nail. The nail can become curved, thickened, and disfigured causing it to grow into the skin. This will continue to happen unless treated appropriately with a minor surgical procedure.
